Tata Power, on Tuesday, announced the commissioning of the second unit (525 MW) of the Maithon power project in Jharkhand.
With this, the coal-fired 1,050 MW Maithon mega power project in Dhanbad has become fully operational. The first unit of 525 MW was commissioned in September 2011. Apart from supplying to DVC, the electricity generated from the Maithon project would be provided to power deficit Northern States.
Maithon Power, a 74:26 joint venture between Tata Power and Damodar Valley Corporation, is implementing the project.
The project had been completed despite challenges such as availability and transportation of coal, Maithon Power CEO Bhaskar Sarkar said.
“We are happy to commission the second unit at Maithon power project. This project further reiterates successful public-private partnership in power generation,’’ Tata Power Managing Director Anil Sardana said.
