Coastal Energen awards contract to German firm

Coastal Energen Private Limited, the power generation flagship company of Coal and Oil group, has awarded a contract to ThyssenKrupp, a group company of ThyssenKrupp of Germany, for installing coal handling plant at its 1,200 MW power plant, Mutiara thermal power plant, Tuticorin. The order is estimated at Rs. 275 crore.

Detailing the progress of the project at a press conference here on Thursday , Ahmed A.R. Buhari, founder President and CEO of Coal and Oil group of companies, said the Rs. 5,000-crore 2x600 MW Tuticorin plant is expected to commence operations by the middle of 2012. The plant has a provision to expand upto 3,600 MW and has achieved financial closure with SBI and 16 other banks. The plant will supply power to the State Electricity Board and to the private sector, for which a power purchase agreement ha been signed with Tata Power, Mr. Buhari said. The company plans to install another power plant of 2 x 800 MW at the existing site.

The work on the Tuticorin power plant had commenced with the placing of order on Harbin Power Engineering Company of China worth Rs. 2,000 crore. Orders for civil works and Bi Flue Chimney have been placed on Gammon India for Rs. 450 crore and construction activity is in full swing. The company had already floated the tenders for all other major contract packages and expected to finalise them shortly, Mr. Buhari said.

Duraiswamy Padmanabhan, Managing Director of Thyssennkrupp India said the coal-handling equipment would have the facility to blend more efficiently the Indian and imported coal.
