Britannia wants 50% sales from rural markets

Britannia Industries Ltd. (BIL) wants to achieve at least 50 per cent of its sales from rural markets in the next five years and become a total food company, according to a top company official.

“Currently 30 per cent of turnover (Rs.8,097.8 crores in 2015-16) comes from rural markets…ideally this should be 50 per cent within the next five years,” said Varun Berry, Managing Director, Britannia Industries during an exclusive interaction.

BIL also plans to boost its rural distributor network from 8,500 now to 10,000. Mr. Berry said the company was planning to establish greenfield units in Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat at an investment of about Rs.450 crore over a period of two years.

Its Bengaluru R&D unit is working on categories which could be introduced to make BIL a total food company, Mr. Berry said.
