BMW Group India has reported a 13% increase in car sales in 2018 at 11,105 cars (BMW + Mini) against 9,800 units sold in 2017. During the year under review, BMW India sold 10,405 cars, an increase of 11% over the corresponding year-earlier period. Mini India reported 66% growth at 700 units against 421 sold in 2017. BMW 5 and BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo have contributed strongly to the sales growth.
BMW also saw significant contribution of up to 50% coming from the locally-produced sports activity vehicle (SAV) range with strong contribution from the new BMW X3, said a company statement.
Presently, BMW X1, BMW X3 and BMW X5 are locally-produced at the Chennai plant. In 2019, the plant will also start local production of BMW X4 and BMW X7.
The iconic Mini Hatch and Mini Countryman together commanded a share of over 60% in Mini sales accounting for major growth, said the statement.
BMW Motorrad India, meanwhile, sold 2,187 motorcycles in the first full year of operations, against sold 252 bikes during 2017. BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS accounted for over 75% of sales.
