AccorHotels plans to bring Raffles to India soon

Unveils Mercure Hotels near Chennai, plans another in Ahmedabad

French hospitality major AccorHotels, which is planning to focus more on leisure segment, will be bringing in luxury hotel Raffles to India soon, said a top official.

“We will be signing pacts with the property owners in weeks or months,” said Jean-Michel Casse, chief operating officer, India and South Asia, AccorHotels. “These luxury hotels will come up in Mumbai, Jaipur and Goa.”

The Singapore-based Raffles Hotels was acquired some 18 months along with Fairmont and Swissotel.

“So far, we have been focusing on setting up hotels in commercial and industrial areas. Recently, we entered South Goa. It takes lot of time to build a luxury hotel. The acquisition of Fairmont and Raffles created lot of exciting opportunities for us in India. We will be bringing these international brands to India to make it an leisure destination,” he said.

On Monday, Mr. Casse announced the opening of the first midscale brand Mercure Hotels in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. It is the sixth property of AccorHotels in Chennai and seventh in Tamil Nadu.

“The new hotel has 100 rooms and is located in the industrial area of Oragadam, just opposite to Apollo Tyres unit. It is ideally suited for business travellers as the nearest business hotel is about 15 kms away, said Neeraj Govil, chief executive, SMP Management Group.

Currently, AccorHotels runs 47 hotels with 8,500 keys across nine brands in 22 cities. During the current year, it plans to add four more hotels in Kochi, Chennai, Vijayawada and Kolkata. The group, which follows asset-light model, will set up three hotels under Novotel brand and one in Ibis.

Asked why the rooms inventory had come down by nearly 1,000 keys, Mr. Casse said they had to snap their pact with Hotel Formule1 in India last year. “We are constructing four new properties and this would take the total number of keys to 10,000 by year end. Next year, we will be setting up Mercure Hotels in Ahmedabad.”
