Volkswagen India announced that its plant in Chakan near Pune, has shipped its 100,000 ‘Made in India’ car for the Mexican market. The Pune facility has achieved this milestone in less than two years after starting the export of cars to Mexico.

The Pune-built Vento replaced the outgoing Jetta Classico in the Mexican market. A company statement said the ‘Made in India’ Vento is among the top three most sold cars in Mexico in the first half of 2015.

Volkswagen also started exporting the Polo made in Chakan to Mexico in late-2014 and nearly every second car produced at the Volkswagen plant in Pune in 2014 was shipped to Mexico. Currently, Volkswagen India exports the Polo and Vento in both left-hand and right-hand drive versions to 32 countries in Asia, Africa and North America.

“The primary focus of the company has been on the domestic market in India,” Carsten Goransch, Executive director – Logistics, Volkswagen India said in a statement. “However, with the decision to enter export markets, we have put our operations in India on a broader and economically sustainable base. With the success of our highest quality cars in a key market like Mexico, we can further increase our scope of export to other countries .”
