‘No local testing for imported vehicles’

September 20, 2018 10:28 pm | Updated 10:28 pm IST - NEW DELHI

The government has dispensed with the need for mandatory local testing of imported vehicles prior to their sale and registration as long as they comply with international standards.

“Whenever a part, component, or assembly is compliant with the international standard namely, EEC or ECE or Japanese, in lieu of the standard notified in the rules, the compliance of such part, component or assembly shall be deemed to be established,” the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said. The Centre has removed the requirement of submitting a prototype of a vehicle for testing before a certificate of compliance can be awarded.

The notification adds that manufacturers or their authorised representatives can annually import up to 2500 units of passenger vehicles comprising not more than eight seats and vehicles with less than four wheels. For all other vehicles, the upper limit for import in a year has been fixed at 500 units.
