Labour dispute impacts March sales of Toyota

In a month where production was impacted due to the ongoing strike at two plants in Bangalore, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) announced that it has sold 8,206 units in the domestic market in March, 2014. This is against the sale of 19,452 units in the same period last year, bringing down production by 57 per cent compared to March 2013.

In February, TKM sold 10,100 units .

The company was in lockout for an entire week starting March 16, following which workers have continued to strike work after refusing to sign a “good conduct undertaking”.

Labour department visit The prolonged dispute continues and the labour department, which had negotiated with the company to lift the lockout last week, is likely to inspect the site on Wednesday, according to sources. The TKM Employee Union president Prasanna Kumar C. said that the dispute was far from resolved as the matter of signing the undertaking and suspension of 17 workers had not been resolved.

In a statement on its site, TKM Senior Vice President (Sales and Marketing),N Raja said, “We started limited operations from March 18, 2014, with the help of our non - unionized team members, majority of whom are supervisors.”
