Gujarat Borosil Limited (GBL) has lined up a capex of ₹435 crore to expand its glass manufacturing capacity at Bharuch to 250 tonnes per day (tpd) by 2020.
The company completed production trials and launched the world's first 2mm thick solar glass on Thursday.
GBL, now with capacity of 171 tpd, plans to set up a new production line and upgrade the existing one.
A majority 75% of its sale comes from domestic clients, while exports contributes remaining 25% of the sales volume.
"We have 25% market share in India. We don't have parity of competition here as dumping of Chinese product has proved a major hindrance to our domestic sales. Our domestic sales in the future are directly linked to the government taking anti-dumping measures," said Mr. Pradeep Kheruka, Vice Chairman GBL.
The company expects that adoption of Borosil's 2mm-thick glass could change the landscape of power production in India, eliminating diesel from India's homes.
"Diesel as an energy source can be eliminated from India's homes if the 2mm glass panel is widely adopted. The potential in-use degradation has been significantly cut down due to the replacement of polymer backing with tempered glass, also making the panels effectively waterproof," said Mr. Kheruka.
GBL's domestic clients includes Tata Solar Power Ltd., Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Central Electronics Ltd., while overseas clients include Solar Watt and RECOM, Germany, Reden Solar and Voltec, France, Trienergia and Suner, Italy, among others.
