First women bank takes off

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday inaugurated the first women commercial bank of the country, the Bharatiya Mahila Bank, here.

Dr. Singh also simultaneously inaugurated branches of the bank in Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Kolkata, Lucknow and Ahmedabad.

Dr. Singh said the setting up of the bank was a small step towards the economic empowerment of women and it was also a reflection of the government’s commitment to this cause. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who was the chief guest, gave away welcome kits to the first five customers of the bank, while Dr. Singh presented sanction letters to the first five loan applicants.
