German auto component major Continental is setting up a plant to manufacture premium surface materials for the automotive industry.
The 12,000-sq. mt. plant will come up at Kesurdi industrial zone in Pune near the Mumbai-Bangalore highway.
₹180-crore investment
The plant, with an initial annual capacity of 5 million square metres, will involve an investment of ₹180 crore.
The factory is slated to go on stream in 2020. The unit will have a workforce of around 110 employees, according to company officials. “We chose Pune due to its closeness to our customers as many vehicle manufacturers and their system suppliers are right on the doorstep.
Proximity to sea and air ports and the large number of higher education institutions in the city also influenced our choice in setting up a plant here,” said Landry Tchapda, plant head, Continental India.
An environment-friendly biogas system would supply energy to the plant, he said.
Dr. Dirk Leiss, head of the surface materials business unit at Continental, said that the new plant would enable the company to improve its reaction time and responsiveness besides helping grow its business in India.
