Central coal trade unions will observe a day’s strike to protest against the government’s move to open up the sector for commercial mining.

The Indian National Mine Workers Federation (INMF), affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress, on Thursday, served a notice for a day’s strike on April 16.

On March 14, the trade unions in the coal mining sector affiliated to four central trade unions – the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sabha, the All India Trade Union Congress, the Hind Mazdoor Sabha and the Centre for Trade Unions - had served their notice for a strike on that day.

`` I serve notice for a 1-day strike in CIL /subsidiaries and SCCL on April 16, 2018, synchronising with the 1-day strike notice by four CTUS i.e. BMS, HMS, AITUC & CITU against the Government of India’s decision to allow commercial mining by private companies”, INWF secretary-general S. Q. Zama said.
