Call to bring big industries to the South

September 27, 2011 01:10 pm | Updated June 24, 2013 11:49 am IST - MADURAI:

Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) has urged the State government to encourage establishment of big industries in southern districts that remain undeveloped.

Several other resolutions were passed during its 37th general body meeting here on Saturday. Other resolutions include urging the Central government and Reserve Bank of India to roll back the recent increase in key interest rates by 25 basis points.

The association also urged the government to create a special credit line with low interest rates for small industries as was being done for women self-help groups. In view of the acute labour shortage faced by the micro, small and medium enterprises, association president V.S. Manimaran called for establishing a skill development centre in Madurai.

He also reiterated a long-pending demand of trade bodies in the region — the construction of a permanent trade centre to help small industries showcase their products. Such a centre would also boost industrial development of Madurai and its surrounding areas and attract foreign companies.

Pollution norms

While welcoming initiatives to safeguard the environment from pollution, the association said that the rules and regulations should be clearly framed for different sectors such as industry, corporation, lodges, and transport vehicles. The MADITSSIA also urged the Southern Railways to refrain from taking any move to terminate all south-bound trains at Tambaram and instead develop Royapuram station so as to decongest Chennai Central railway station.

Apart from urging the government to bring in major companies to the IT parks at Ilanthaikulam and Vadapalanji in Madurai district, the association also called for long term plans to tackle the increasing vehicular traffic in the city.
