The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) on Wednesday unveiled an ambitious plan to make Gwalior and its neighbourhood into a major destination for both domestic and global investments.
Addressing a press conference in Bhopal, Assocham national Secretary General, D. S. Rawat, said the city and the area around it had a potential to attract investments of over Rs. 75,000 crore in various sectors including food processing, chemicals, stone cutting, information technology and textiles.
Noting that Gwalior district had clocked a compounded annual growth rate of 8.7 per cent during 2004-05 and 2012-13, he said it could have grown more but for the poor infrastructure facilities.
“Upgradation of connectivity with major commercial hubs, establishment of state of the art training and skill development centres, setting up of knowledge based industries like business process outsourcing and knowledge processing outsourcing and cluster based approach to drive down costs, increase efficiency and speed up production in small and medium enterprises can lead the district on a growth trajectory”, he noted.
Assocham, he said, has planned to organise a conference cum exhibition at Gwalior on February 20. Union Minister for Steel and Mines, Narendra Singh Tomar, and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, have agreed to attend the meet.
