Flipkart, India’s largest online retailer, denied reports that it is gearing up to lay off 700-1,000 employees for poor performance.
“Flipkart denies all allegations of a lay-off,” a Flipkart spokesperson was quoted in a statement. “As a performance-oriented organisation, we follow a transparent evaluation process.”
300 below-parFlipkart said that it has over 30,000 employees in the country and about 300 people were not able to meet the performance bar. But they were not told to resign or handed over the pink slips, the Flipkart spokesperson said. “At times, we have employees who do not meet the performance bar,” said the spokesperson.
The company said in those situations Flipkart works closely with employees to enable them to improve their performance. The company said in due course, if these employees are unable to make the desired progress, “they are encouraged to seek opportunities outside the company where their skills can be better utilised.”
The company said this is a fairly common practice across various industries- especially in high-performing Internet organisations.
Flipkart said the top performers are rewarded highly and promoted to the next level of growth. This week Flipkart bought a smaller rival Jabong for $70 million (Rs.467 crore) in cash.
