India to be partner country at Hannover Fair

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Germany in early April after the government inked an agreement on India’s participation as the partner country of the Hannover Messe (Fair) 2015.

The likelihood of Mr Modi attending the Hannover Fair is high since the head of the government of the partner country is invited by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

India was the partner country for the fair in 2006, during the early years of the United Progressive Alliance Government, and several major deals were finalised including joint ventures between Mann Age and Force Motors, Deutsche Bann and Indian Railways. The then Prime Minister Manmnohan Singh had visited Germany and attended the fair along with Ms. Merkel.

Germany is among the world’s top export engines and one of India’s largest trading partners. “I am very happy that India will have a first-class opportunity to show to the world that its economy is on the move again,’’ observed German Ambassador Michael Steiner.

``India’s participation at the Hannover Fair is timely as it would advance the campaign of the new government for making India the hub of global manufacturing,” said Engineering Exports Promotion Council chief Anupam Shah.

About 300 Indian engineering companies including public sector giants will participate in the five-day fair.
