The appointment of Shaktikanta Das as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has elicited positive response from across the spectrum.

The former IAS officer had played a crucial role in the State gaining a prominent position in the industrial map of the country. His ability to push the growth momentum during successive regimes in the State has been widely acknowledged.

“A very good choice, he is a very capable and diligent officer. He has done well in every assignment that he has handled,” said Venu Srinivasan, chairman of TVS Motor. R. Seshasayee, chairman, IndusInd Bank, too feels Mr. Das is a good choice for the job. “He has good experience in economic management at the national level with an impeccable track record. There can be differences [of opinion].

“The need of the hour is the ability to resolve conflict and move forward. Mr. Das has the capacity to listen and learn and handle things efficiently,” Mr. Seshasayee said. Mallika Srinivasan, chairman, TAFE Ltd., said “ He (Mr. Das) is a very matured and highly respected professional. He has rich experience and is an eminently suitable choice at this point of time as we look forward for the growth being propelled.”

According to N. Sankar, chairman, Sanmar group, Mr. Das is a ‘proven administrator’. “I’m sure he will do well.” Highlighting his long stint in the government, former RBI Governor C. Rangarajan said, “He [Mr. Das] has a lot of experience in economic affairs, and, therefore, he should make a good governor. He has been in the government for a long time.

“This is not the first time that a person from the administrative service has been appointed as RBI Governor. It has happened in the past. Once he takes over as the Governor, he should stick to the traditions of RBI. He should work towards ensuring the autonomy, credibility and independence of RBI,” Dr. Rangarajan said.

Former Revenue Secretary M.R. Sivaraman too feels that Mr. Das is a good choice. “He has worked in various departments of the government and was involved in the budget-making process as well. Former deputy governor of RBI H.R. Khan said, “He has the experience and the expertise. He was in the Finance Ministry for a long time, handled the budget; he has been on the board of Reserve Bank for quite sometime.

“He is a Sherpa for G20 so he has international experience. And he is a man known for consensus building. He is capable of standing up and saying his point of view. He is a balanced person and a good choice under the circumstances.”
