After the Olympics LPU students and alumni won 4 medals for India at Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.

India finished at the 4th position in the medal tally in the 2022 Commonwealth Games by winning 22 Gold medals (61 medals in total – 16 Silver & 23 Bronze medals). This is one of the best performances of India in the Commonwealth Games. In this historic performance, 12 LPU students and alumni won medals for India.

LPU student and Wrestler Bajrang Punia won Gold; 8 of its students have together grabbed Silver medal through their collective participation in the Indian men’s hockey team; and two of its women boxer & wrestler- Jasmine Lamboria and Pooja Gehlot, respectively, have bagged Bronze medals individually. In addition, its rhythmic gymnast Bavleen presented an exuberant performance for gathering winsome applause.

Thus, in India’s whopping 61 medal tally, LPU students have contributed one Gold medal, one Silver medal and two Bronze medals. In the 2020 Olympics as well LPU students, including Neeraj Chopra, won 4 medals for India.

LPU students forming a big part of the Indian hockey team are of different professional programmes. Five of them, Captain Manpreet Singh, Vice-Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh, Mandeep Singh and Varun Kumar are pursuing MBA programmes at LPU. Hardik Singh is following MA; whereas, Jugraj Singh and Gurjant Singh are in BA programmes. All of them played well with their skills and strength and exhibited the best of hockey on the world stage. Worth mentioning is that India’s hockey team which had 8 LPU students also won a Bronze medal in Olympics last year.

MA Public Administration student Bajrang Punia also won a Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Jasmine Lamboria is a BP Ed student and Pooja Gehlot is pursuing the M.P Ed programme at LPU. Promising Bavleen is a BA student.

Congratulating the winning students and their mentors at the sports department of the university, Chancellor Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal wants all of them and others like them to keep on scaling the winning ladders. Dr. Mittal also shared that LPU also has a special scholarship scheme, mentorship and due honour for the eminent sports persons of the country. Many LPU students are now Olympians, International and national sports persons of top ranks including ace Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, wrestler Bajrang Punia, Hockey Captain Manpreet Singh and many more.
