Two dead as police fire on mob in Bangalore

Two persons were killed and two others injured when police opened fire this afternoon [February 4] to quell a violent mob which, attacked the Vyalikaval police station here [Bangalore]. The death of a person, arrested yesterday in connection with a theft case, is said to have sparked off the rioting. According to the police, Munichandra (25), a previous convict and a suspect in a theft case, was arrested yesterday. While in the lock-up Munichandra asked for some water yesterday afternoon, but before it could be brought he hung himself with a muffler tied to the iron bar of the lock-up gate. It is learnt he was treated at the police station and sent later to the Victoria Hospital where he died at about 10-30 last night. A mob of 2,000 collected near the police station at noon to-day and demanded the production of a Sub-Inspector, but he was not present there then.
