The late Dr. Naoroji. Meeting at Bombay.

A public meeting of the citizens of Bombay under the Presidentship of H.E. the Governor was held this evening at the Town Hall to consider how to perpetuate the memory of the late Dr. Dadabhai Naoroji. H.E. Lord Willingdon, in opening the proceedings, paid an eloquent tribute to the memory of Dr. Dadabhai and, continuing, said: The other day I said that we could ill spare in these stirring times for this country the guiding hand of three great leaders whom the hand of death has taken from us within the last two years. I feel all the more to-day the need for their guidance and counsel now that the Secretary of State has declared that responsible Government in India as an integral part of the Empire is the goal of British policy and has decided to personally visit this country to decide upon the best steps for the advance, but to those of us who are left and who have some responsibility for the control of political thought and action I would venture to give to-day a few words of advice. I would urge my Indian fellow citizens to cultivate in these times the quality of patience and trust like Dr. Dadabhai in the justice of British rule. I would ask them in all fairness never to forget the immense services that my countrymen have given to the advance of their country in the past. I would beg them to remember that we are here amongst them with but one object in view, to assist them in the progress and development of their native land, and I would ask my own fellow countrymen always to rerecollect that there is not an Englishman in this country, whatever his profession, who has not got a great Imperial duty to perform the duty of binding by example of courtesy, sympathy and friendship the ties of affection and loyalty between this great country and our own Motherland.
