Rajiv weds Sonia in Indian style

Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, son of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, married Sonia Maino, a 21-year-old Italian girl whom he met at Cambridge two years ago, at a glittering ceremony here [New Delhi] this evening [February 25]. The ceremony held on the tastefully decorated lush green lawns of the Prime Minister’s residence lasted a little over 30 minutes. Amidst chanting of Vedic hymns and soft notes of “Shehnai” the couple garlanded each other with jasmine and roses, signed the Registrar’s book in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. B.N. Tandon, and exchanged rings, before being declared man and wife. Only members of the Nehru family, relatives of the late Feroze Gandhi and the bride’s family which arrived here last week, and a few close friends were present. The bride, draped in a salmon pink “zari-gota” saree and decked in flowers instead of jewellery in the Kashmiri tradition, arrived at the Prime Minister’s residence shortly after six. She was chaperoned by her uncle, Mr. Angello Predebon. They were greeted in the Indian style among others by Mrs. Gandhi, Mrs. Vijayalakshmi Pandit, Mr. K.N. Kaul, brother of the late Kamala Nehru, and Tahmina Gandhi, sister of the late Feroze Gandhi. Someone sprinkled rose water from a silver container. As cine and T.V. cameras whirred, Mrs. Gandhi gently led Rajiv in cream sherwani, churidar and a flowing turban to the place where Sonia Maino stood. They were helped to garland each other from a golden tray.
