The situation in Nagaland has taken a dramatic and potentially dangerous turn with the dissident underground Naga leader “Gen” Kaito having detained the acting chief of the rebel army “Gen” Zuheto and two of his associates. Though the news broke out here [Kohima] only to-day [June 10], the detention was made at Pherima on June 7 at the end of a meeting at which “Gen” Kaito charged the three men with having plotted his murder. Mr. Kughato Sukhai, former “Prime Minister” was among several prominent Sema underground Naga leaders who attended the meeting. Observers here believe that “Gen” Kaito’s charge was a trumped-up one and the actual motive behind his action was his well-known opposition to the underground Naga’s policy of collusion with China.
