New West Bengal Cabinet

A six-member non-Congress coalition Ministry with Mr. Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee as Chief Minister assumed office here [Calcutta] this morning [March 2]. The Governor, Miss Padmaja Naidu, administered the oath of office and of secrecy to Mr. Mukherjee, Mr. Jyoti Basu (C.P.I.-Marxist), Mr. Somnath Lahiri (C.P.I.), Mr. Hemanta Kumar Basu (Forward Bloc), Dr. P.C. Ghosh (Ind.) and Mr. Jehangir Kabir (Bangla Congress). Among the invitees present at the swearing in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan were Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab and Mr. Humayun Kabir. The ceremony was simple and solemn, rigidity of protocol being relaxed. Later, the Governor entertained the Ministers to tea. The Chief Minister later told Pressmen that he would be holding all the portfolios till March 6 when the rest of the Council of Ministers would be sworn in. The strength of the Ministry was likely to be 12 Cabinet Ministers and 4 Ministers of State. Mr. Mukherjee and his Cabinet colleagues were given a big reception at the Raj Bhavan gate and profusely garlanded. Thousands who had gathered in front of the Raj Bhavan lustily cheered the new Ministers.
