Pakistani politics appear to be in turmoil following the recent launching of the People’s Party by the former Foreign Minister, Mr. Z.A. Bhutto. The new party and its “mercurial” leader have placed the ruling Muslim League on a constant state of alert judging from the current “mass contact” drive by President Ayub Khan. Mr. Bhutto’s utterances are known to have attracted much critical notice of the Government-managed Press, which seems keen on “correcting” his popular image where it is strongest — the youth and the intelligentsia. President Ayub himself betrayed his anxiety over Mr. Bhutto’s growing popularity when he is reported to have labelled him “childish and irresponsible” in his first public address in three years, in Rawalpindi 10 days ago.
