From the Archives: P.M. dismisses charge against Desai

The Lok-Sabha to-day [August 19, New Dellhi] rejected by an overwhelming majority, of 193 to 57 votes Mr. Madhu Limaye’s motion seeking to disapprove the conduct of the Deputy Prime Minister for “certain false statements made in the House” by him as well as the conduct of the Prime Minister is not asking him to resign. The Prime Minister, who replied to the four-hour debate which was held in a tense atmosphere, dismissed the motion as “misconceived” and, therefore, deserving to be rejected. She said, amidst cheers, that the opposition had made no case to impel her to oblige them by asking the Deputy Prime Minister to resign and thus part with her colleague. The House rejected earlier a motion suggesting the appointment of 18 members of the House to investigate the whole matter.
