From the Archives (October 22, 1969): Uniform Civil Code(Letters to the Editor)

October 22, 2019 12:15 am | Updated 12:15 am IST

Sir, – Mr P. K. Shabbir Ahmed has claimed (in a recent letter) that marriage laws of Muslims form a part and parcel of their religion and implied that the Government should not therefore impose a uniform civil code for the entire country. It is not out of place to mention here that even for Hindus, marriage is a sacrament and is a part and parcel of their religion. If the Government can legislate about an issue touching the religious matters of Hindus one cannot see why it should not bar polygamous marriages by enforcing a uniform civil code to include all Indian nationals, irrespective of their religion, as after all India is a secular country.

K. R. Rajagopal,

Madras.
