From the Archives (October 11, 1919): Cyclone in Bengal.

Calcutta, October 11. — A Madaripur Correspondent states that Mr. Cumming, member of the Executive Council, visited Madaripur on October 9th and discussed the situation with the members of the Cyclone Distress Committee consisting of officials and non-officials. He issued orders to Collectors in the affected area to spend as much as is necessary for relieving distress. He authorised the Central Committee to grant loans to poor Bhadraloks taking receipts from them as well as ragi seeds and cloth. Free centres for the distribution of rice and money have already been opened. Mr. Roy, Collector, is at work... visiting different areas.

A Dacca Correspondent states that the Lord Bishop of Mylapore has wired to Father Pio Superior to render every possible help in the free distribution of money and rice to the distressed people in Eastern Bengal. Prompt measures have been taken for relief work.
