In the course of his speech at the extraordinary general meeting of the Tata Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., yesterday [in Bombay on November 7] Sir Dorab Tata, Chairman, referring to the scheme of greater extension of the company’s operation said: How large is the demand for the products of the iron and steel industry may be seen from the figures of our imports in ordinary times. In the year before the war we imported in this country galvanised iron tin plate, steel sheets and plates, constructional iron work, railway plant, machinery and such other iron and steel articles, to the value of nearly 35 crores of rupees. How far we shall be able to meet the Indian demand, would be an interesting calculation. All that I am able to say is that when our extensions are complete, we shall be able to produce on an additional capitalisation of seven crores of rupees, five to six times our present output.
