From the Archives (July 6, 1918): A Daylight Robbery in Madras.

Annoo alias Vadivelu, and Ponnan alias Thangavelu, were charged by the F. Division Police [in Madras] with robbery on the 9th April last. The case for the prosecution was that about 6 P.M. on the day in question, a weaver woman named Kuppabai was proceeding along Lang’s Garden Road near Pudupet, when the two accused accosted her. The first accused then struck and knocked her down, and the second man removed her necklace and bolted away. The matter was reported to the Police and Sub-Inspector Rajaram Singh arrested the accused. His Worship found both the accused guilty and sentenced the first accused who had two previous convictions to his credit to two years’ rigorous imprisonment, in addition to pay a fine of Rs. 50 and to report his whereabouts to the Police for a period of one year after release from jail. The second accused was sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment.
