From the Archives: High Prices and Unrest at Madras

Sir Alexander Cardew and Hon’ble Mr. Rajagopalachariyar are coming to Madras to examine the position with regard to foodstuffs prices and concert measures with the Chamber of Commerce and the public bodies for dealing with the situation. On Saturday last [September 14] there were persistent rumours in the city that the mill hands having received their pay would sally out to loot the cloth bazaars. Either the Police or the public would hardy have had any credence in such baseless rumours but, for the fact that or the Demoale’s Road Market a manuscript poster was seen in which the life of a Mahammedan shopkeeper who, on a previous occasion, gave timely intimation to the Police, was threatened.
