From the Archives (Dec. 31, 1968): Chinese Embassy staff provoke Tibetans

December 31, 2018 12:15 am | Updated 12:15 am IST

Nearly 100 Tibetan refugees to-day [December 30] entered the Chinese Embassy in Chanakyapuri this morning and there was a scuffle between them and the Chinese staff. Jeering and gesticulating Chinese are said to have provoked the Tibetans, who had come in a procession, to forcibly enter the premises. The Tibetans led by Mr. M.L. Sondhi, Jan Sangh M.P., had gone to the Embassy to demonstrate against the insulting behaviour meted out to an Indian editor, Mr. Frank Moraes, in Kathmandu by some Chinese technicians and Chinese workers. Forty-five Tibetan demonstrators were arrested. The trouble started when the Tibetans and Indians, standing a little distance from the Embassy gate singing their national songs, were jeered at by the Chinese staff near the gate. Two of them were busy taking pictures and waving at the Tibetans which seemed to have provoked the Tibetans.
