Wrong girl fatally operated on

A 11-year-old girl died in the Bhabha hospital in the western suburbs yesterday [August 5, Bombay] due to a wrong operation performed on her, police said to-day [August 6]. According to the police, Miss Indira Krishna Gawade was admitted to the hospital on August 2 for treatment and she was to be screened on August 5 morning. On August 3 another girl was admitted in the same ward for tonsils operation on August 5. The two girls along with four other patients were taken to the operation theatre where there was also a screening room. Miss Gawade who was meant for screening of her chest was wrongly taken to the operation theatre and operated for tonsils. After the operation the girl became pale and the pulse came down. The doctor started resuscitation measures but failed and the girl died. It was realised only then that the operation had been performed on the wrong patient, police said.
