The tenth edition of The Hindu-Young World Quiz 2009 — eighth in Tiruchi region — witnessed an overwhelming enthusiasm on the part of students of Stds. VII to IX here recently.

A total of 338 teams consisting of 676 students representing 88 schools took part in the regional prelims that saw the best six teams emerge as finalists to battle it out in the six rounds of the main edition of the quiz. The 25 questions for the prel ims that spanned various subjects also determined the utility of getting beyond textual learning. The scores of the teams kept fluctuating at the end of each of the six rounds, exposing the participants as well as the audience to unlimited excitement. Almost all the teams played it safe in a couple of rounds which carried negative marking. A notable aspect was the flourish with which students among the audience responded to open questions. They were rewarded with goodies from sponsors on the spot by quiz master V.V. Ramanan.

Finally, R. Lakshmanan and A. Aswin Nataraj from SBIOA Matric H.S. School, Tiruchi, who managed to maintain the lead till the end finished first with 85 points. Aarthi Venkataraman and V. Sushanthi Prithika of R.S.K. Higher Secondary School, Tiruchi, came second with 75 points. Close behind was the team from Akilandeswari Vidyalaya, Tiruchi, represented by Aswin S. Varrier and J. Muralli.

Another team from SBIOA consisting of M. Balasubramanian and S.K. Nithya Sri Murugan was placed fourth. The team of S. Mahendra Kumar and S. Karthick Nishanth of Holy Cross Matric H.S. School, Salem, was placed fifth. And S. Abisek and V. Sidharth of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Srirangam, were ranked sixth. All the 676 students received participation certificates.

Honouring the winners with trophies and sponsors’ goodies, the chief guest, N. Mohammed Riaz, Hockey Olympian and Arjuna awardee, emphasised that there was certainty of success through relentless hard work. He was delighted at being a part of the event, and explained to students the high recognition accruing from top-order performance in sports and games. Mr. Riaz felt that equal importance ought to be given to academics and sports.
