Rounds of excitement marked the Young World quiz in Coimbatore.

The tenth edition of Coimbatore regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz was a carnival with brass bands, dazzling banners and house beats. The whole place was booming with shrill voices and the loudspeakers pumping music.
City school Vidhya Niketan qualified for the finals. 467 teams from 135 schools battled it out to qualify for the regional finals. Six made it. Apart from the winning school, the others were Chinmaya International Residential School, Vidya Vikasini Matric H.S. School, Vivekam Matric H.S. School, State Bank of India Officer’s Association (SBIOA) Matric H.S. School and Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Udhagamandalam.
Participants from Stds. VII to IX, accompanied by parents and teachers, turned up from the city and western Tamil Nadu and Palakkad. The prelims covered everything from mythology to botany and geography to sports.
Did you know that the collective noun for leopards is “leap”, or, that Allium sativum is the scientific name for garlic? The kids at Geedee Auditorium did know and they had a blast with huge gift hampers for correct answers to audience questions. There were some comic moments too as the audience variously identified Anna Ivanovic as Soumya Viswanathan, Serena Williams and Sania Mirza.
The chief guest was Ravi Sam, chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry, Coimbatore zone. There were six rounds in all. Crunch time came in the final round of rapid questions called “Shoot to glory”. Quizmaster V.V. Ramanan bowled contestants over with his questions.
The lead
D. Tharunya and Arnav Chandrasekhar of Vidhya Niketan shot ahead in the “Shoot to glory” rapid answer round. SBIOA came in second with KV and Chinmaya tied for the third place. Chinmaya lost to KV, with a wrong answer in the buzzer round.
The first, second and third teams got cash prizes of Rs. 8,000, Rs 6,000 and Rs. 4,000 per team, respectively, along with other goodies from the sponsors.
The national sponsors were S&M Kids Wear, Kalasalingam University, Black Thunder, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, Gold Winner, Hatsun Agro, Vizag Steel, Lotte Caramilk, Crocs Shoes, Firefox bicycles, Brittanica Encyclopedia, Penguin Books, Cherry Blossom, Reynolds and Dabur Real and, iAds and Events. iAds and Events were also the event managers.
