Promoting Kutcheri

SUSHMA BARVATHYA

Keeping classical forms of music alive has become a necessity today!

Imbibing culture: Winning tunes

Sangeetha Parishath in association with the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan organised a Carnatic music competition at Ravindra Kalabhavan, University College, recently. In the finals, 11 children in the age group of 15 and 16 years participated, making it an interesting musical rendezvous. Budding musicians from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasargod districts participated.

Winners all

Pavan, a 13-year-old from Sullia, 15-year-old Srivibhu from Mangalore and 12-year-old Tanvi D.I. from Puttur came first, second and third respectively, in the junior category. Eleven-year-old Dwitika from Mangalore bagged a consolation prize.

In the senior category, Shreya Kulathaya and Aneesh V. Bhat, from Puttur were the first and second prize winners with Preethi S. from Manipal bagging the third place. The winners will receive prizes at the valedictory function of Sangeethotsava, a musical extravaganza to be held by Parishath from November 26 to 29 at Ravindra Kalabhavan.

Parishath secretary, Manjunath Bhat, said that the participants were selected from the first round held in the last week of October. “As we did not conduct the competition last year, this year there was an overwhelming response with the first round witnessing participation from 36 children in the junior category and 17 in the senior category. First place winners of the final rounds in both the categories will be provided with an opportunity to sing during the Sangeethotsav. Other winners and participants will get an opportunity in other programmes conducted by the Parishath through the year,” he informed.

Srivibhu, of Std X, Canara High School (Main) and disciple of musician Saroja Mohan Rao, said that he has been training in Carnatic music for the past seven years. A first-time participant in the competition, he said that the competition is a learning experience with an opportunity to learn from other budding singers. “We were asked to sing one Devaranama and Kriti in the first round as well as the second round and had to be thorough in at least three Devaranamas and Kritis as the judges had the choice of selecting any two for us to sing,” he said.

Bhat said though children are allowed to participate any number of times in this annual event, a winner is barred from participating for the next two years. “This is a move to provide opportunity to budding talent . Further, Parishath is striving to promote Kutcheri culture among the youth of the region,” he said.
