Challenges galore!

M.P. PRAVEEN

The competition tested their skills and finally ended in a nail biting finale.

Winners of the Kochi City Finals: Entering the Limca Book of Records Quiz 2009

The competition was intense, the test of their skill severe and time for their response limited. Arjun R. Menon and Adarsh Unnikrishnan from Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, proved equal to the challenge and walked away as the winners of the Kochi City Finals of the Limca Book of Records Quiz, 2009, held in the city recently. They will now have to dig deep into their knowledge bank as a far stiffer competition awaits them at the semi finals where they will have to lock horns with equally brilliant competitors from 74 schools across the country.

Chinmaya Vidyalaya, the venue of the quiz, adorned a festive look as students clad in different uniforms converged for the Kochi city finals. Out of the 400 students from 55 schools, six teams were shortlisted for the finals comprising ten challenging rounds.

Exciting

The competition was intense as the winners emerged after, not one, but two tiebreaker questions. What came to the aid of the winners was the knowledge about the mystery Sri Lankan spinner Ajanta Mendis. The question was the name of the Sri Lankan cricketer who was promoted to the rank of a Sergeant. The team from Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, ended up as runners up.

“It was an incredible quiz with a very tight finish. We hope to qualify and win the nationals as well,” said an elated Arjun after receiving the medal. His partner Aditya found the quiz a “rocking experience not just because we won it but it was a great quizzing experience that tested our knowledge, ability, and the determination to win.”

The audience was as enthusiastic and knowledgeable as the participants, as was proved when the quizmaster Jason Pote tossed questions at them. On occasions, students even proved that they were better than their teachers. Actor Suja Karthika along with Deepak Jolly, vice president (Public Affairs and Communications) Coca Cola India, gave away the gold and silver medals to the winners. The quiz was jointly promoted by Coca Cola along with Know and Grow with Derek, founded by Derek O’ Brien. The quiz, which is open to students from Std VIII to Std XII, will cover 3,000 schools in 75 cities.
