To inculcate the reading habit in children, imparting informed choices, creating awareness and informing about the changes in and around them are the key objectives of the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme. The NIE at Velammal International School, Panchetti, was inaugurated by V. Palanikumar, IAS, Collector, Thiruvallur district.

The principal, K. Kothandaraman, stressed holistic development of children as he addressed the gathering. Palanikumar said that “perseverance and dedication are the key words for development of students.”

Newspaper and exams

He shared with the students that reading The Hindu helped him clear his civil services exam. “The purpose of education is to inculcate discipline and enhance the knowledge of the students,” he said. Twenty-five students who excelled over the past year were recognised and certificates were given out to them. Students from the school also shared their experiences as they spoke on different topics from NIE programme that helped them fight the fear of exams.

It was clear that the inclusion of the NIE programme added the “fun” quotient to learning. Palanikumar’s thought provoking words that education should be people-centric and reading should bring about a change and help them become good to great individuals ended the session.
