Sri Sivananda Balalaya
World Environment Day 2009 was observed by the students of Sri Sivananda Balalaya with enthusiasm and concern for the future.
As part of the celebration the children took out an awareness rally carrying placards with slogans about combating environmental degradation and global warming. The rally caught the attention of the public and made them pause, read and absorb the mess
age.
There was also an interactive session with Dr. Alagappa Moses of the Department of Environment Studies, Bishop Heber College. He made a comprehensive survey tracing world environment consciousness starting from the first world summit at Rio in 1972 in which Prime Minister Indira Gandhi made a presentation representing India’s concern.
He touched upon issues like sustainable development, green house gases and industrial waste. Dr. Moses emphasised the point that unless and until the attitude of people changed, combating climate change would be very difficult.
This was followed by a slogan writing competition by the students.
While the slogan “Riding bicycle every day keeps global warming away” won the first prize in the competition, the second prize went to the slogan “We have right only to warm up our home; not the world”.
