Proud moments: The winners
Harshitha and Arjun of BVB Nagarjun School won the “Verbattle Junior 2008,” a State-level debate and dialogue tournament held for school children. They bagged a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh at the final contest held on August 14. The second place was shared by the other two finalists Anush and Varshini of CMR National Public School, Bangalore, and Madhugiri and Akhilesh of ITI Central School.
Both teams were honoured with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 each.
The three finalists debated on topics “Internet”, “Money makes the world go round” and “Bangalore is a state of modernity and tradition.” Over 2,000 students from 500 schools participated in the tournament.
Raghavendra from ITC Central School, Bangalore, was chosen the best speaker in the State preliminary round and was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 5,000. The zonal winners from Hubli (Dhanashree H. Bakale and Harishika Patel of Jain English Medium School) and Mangalore (Prajna D’Silva and Roshini of St. Therasa School) were also given a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each.
Deciding factor
The final rounds were moderated and presented by television host Deepak Thimaya, who is also the founder of Verbattle Junior. The judges included Chairman of the RV Institutions Panduranga Shetty, former Commissioner of Police Mariswamy, and Chairman of CII Joseph Ollapally.
Deepak Thimaya said: “Verbattle Junior has proved the prowess of the young debaters and it gets more competitive each passing year and choosing one winner from so many talented ones gets extremely difficult every year.”
