It had all the familiar features of a rural backdrop. A meandering rail track and a train chugging its way through vast stretches of fields, a cowshed where cattle lazed around, washerwomen at the village stream and a school. The model village portrayed in a portion of the classroom was mainly about self-sufficiency. “We used only paper to make these objects dotting the village scenario,” explained R. Jayasree, the U.K.G. class teacher.

Effective

The science exhibition organised on the premises of Gurukul English Medium School at Labbipet was a learning experience. “The most effective way of learning things is by doing them. We wanted to give a platform to the children to express their innovative thoughts and the result is mind-blowing,” said principal V. Prasannavadana.

Moral stories with attractive illustrations to support the message and other interesting aspects were included in the Hindi section.

Identification of freedom fighters and national leaders by kindergarteners, explanation about basic things such as how to keep oneself clean, a good house, uses of plants and all about vitamins was an enriching treat.

The students converted a couple of classrooms on the first floor into a science lab where seniors elucidated scientific principles behind various theories. Students demonstrated with élan on subjects like shadows, micro-organisms and development of an embryo in a mother’s womb.“This kind of an event also enables parents to take a peek into their child’s ability to understand things. The sight of their children holding the fort gives them a sense of satisfaction,” said Ms. Prasannavadana.
