The Arithmetic-made-easy mantra from the land of Confucius is gaining grounds in this part of the world and has many enthusiasts who have cracked the code. Antony Joseph secured the first rank in the ICMAS (International Concept of Mental Arithmetic Systems) Third Level seniors (without Abacus) in a State championship recently. “I prepared for a few days before the competition,” he says but agrees to the fact that he puts in an hour daily to work on it. Inciden tally Antony is not too keen about mathematics as a subject but finds Abacus pretty interesting. “It helps to boost your memory power and you tend to get more focussed while studying,” he says about his mental fitness mantra. As for his other penchants, he likes neu metal and his favourite band is Linkin Park. He belongs to the class of readers who are into P.G. Wodehouse, Sherlock Holmes and the classics. His recent read was C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series, apart from Roald Dahl. Though the Std IX student of St Andrews School Bowenpally is as much hooked onto junk food as his peers, he is not much into the tube. Television time is when Tintin or ‘Enter the Dragon’ is on air.

Antony is as enthusiastic about martial arts-he is an avid Bruce Lee fan, as well as football and rugby. He is good at chess as well.

Ask him what next? And pat comes the reply, “I am waiting for the national championship.” Here’s wishing him more laurels to come.
