Tale from two countries

JOHN L PAUL

Cultural exchanges are great learning experiences.

Young debaters: At the Gregorian Public School

A team of 14 students and six teachers from the UK visited the Gregorian Public School, Kochi, to interact with the host students. They also participated in a debate competition organised at the school jointly by the Cambridge Education at Islington and the Holloway School and Elizabeth Garret Anderson Language College, London (from where the guests came). The team was led by project manager of Cambridge, Kate Wilson. She spoke of the special experience that the visitors h ad at Gregorian.

Learning lessons

“The campus was beautiful and the love shown by the staff and students was touching. We were welcomed with smiles, flowers and tea. This spirit continued throughout the busy debating schedule. The host students were bright and the school is located amidst tranquil settings, which calms the mind,” she said.

The Principal of Gregorian, K V Paulose spoke of how the host students managed to overcome differences of English accent and culture. “It was debating of a different level, where they spoke on whether students must have a say in curriculum design; equality of sexes and the need to stop pollution at all costs. More than the debates, it was a cultural interaction. The students learned how to maturely handle differences of opinion.” A standard IX student of Gregorian, Mathew Kurian, spoke of the debating experience and the fun the students had with the guests. “It broadened our views and we learned about different aspects of life of the guests. They spoke a lot about their families too. Our hearts reach out to them for their help, friendship, love and everything that they gave us,” he said. Another student Sachit Joseph spoke of how he learned much about life in Britain, the debate system in the British parliament and the way it is conducted.
