Celebrating with song and dance

JOHN L. PAUL

A musical extravaganza, it also had parents participating.

Music and dance evening: Fun time

What began at The Choice School four years ago as Musicadenza – a musical evening, has now evolved into the Music and Dance Show.

The music and dance faculty of the school began training the students weeks in advance for this much-awaited event.

This time, the dance was a fusion of styles from the East and the West and explored the similarities of dance forms like the Attakalari and contemporary dance, the Assamese Bihu and the Arabian Belly dance, the Kathak and the Tap dance, apart from the Rajasthani Folk Dance and the Spanish Flamenco.

A stage was specially built for the occasion in the campus, with Vijay Yesudas, playback singer and Shyamala Surendran, disciple of the famous dancers, the Dhananjayans and the founder of Dharani School of Performing Arts Trust gracing the occasion as the honoured guests of the evening.

Drums and violins

The music show was organised by a team led by Jerry Amaldev, popular music director and the head of the Music department of the school. Popular numbers like Pink Floyd’s ‘Wall’ and ‘Broken’ by Amy Lee Seethar, were performed with ease by junior and senior students.

The musical show was presented in the form of the dream of a young boy, an aspiring music composer through whose genius the various musical compositions wafted one after another.

The drums ensemble with an array of varying percussion instruments, the violin ensemble, the fusion of musical styles presented by the opening orchestra and their professional touch drew a lot of applause from the audience.

“This might be among the few schools where parents too are given an opportunity to express their talents at singing and dancing,” said Molly Cyril, principal. Some teachers too joined in the singing.

Over 250 kids from standards V to XII participated in the programme that lent a festive air to the school.

“One of our aims was to show the similarities between Indian and foreign dance forms and this was well received by the audience,” said Ms Cyril.

The guests - Vijay Yesudas and Shyamala Surendran were present for the show.

The entire show was orchestrated by Sunitha Satheesh, Vice Principal, Non Academics.

The three bands of the school too performed.
