A parliament by children that helps them understand the functioning of the Government.

Taking the lead: The children’s team.
Bills were passed with ease on various issues including taking steps to develop spoken English among children and maintaining litter-free classrooms. Earlier, Visvek, Minister for Spoken English spoke, while his counterpart Kavya, Minister for Environment, voiced his opinion on the necessity for improving spoken English among children. Bills were passed under the presidentship of the Speaker, L. Sharon.
Do not be taken aback, Visvek, Kavya and Sharon, all Std. III students of Mahatma Montessori Matric H.S. School (Baba Building), performed their roles to perfection as part of their lesson on “Our Government” in the Social Science subject.
Against learning plain text, a demonstration would help the kids more as it would involve the children, said Muthu Sudha, co-ordinator of the programme.
As the lesson was on “Our Government”, the school management wanted its students to learn and experience the situations and functioning of the Government in a different way and hence this attempt, said Valli Vishalakshi, social science teacher.
Party names
Earlier, the students formed parties named as ‘Students’ Peace Party,’ and ‘Mahatma Parishram Kazhagam,’ in Baba Building and ‘Satya,’ ‘Dharma’ and ‘Prema’ in K.K. Nagar school.
Later, the students designed their party symbols and flags. What followed was an election campaign for two days when students went about canvassing from class to class.
“Every process of election was meticulously followed by the students and they enjoyed it, besides understanding every procedure,” said Usha Shankar, headmistress.
After the campaign followed the poll, where children signed the voters’ list and had the ink mark on the index finger. There was also a demonstration on how to fold the ballot paper before putting it in the ballot box.
Students themselves counted the votes and the results were announced in the evening.
In the Baba Building, Student’s Peace Party had a sweeping victory in six wards out of seven, while in K.K. Nagar School the three parties had won in three wards and formed a coalition government. The school pupil leaders organised the swearing in ceremony when the Ministers for Spoken English, Environment, Academics and Communication, Art and Craft, Calligraphy, Health and Hygiene, Sports and Discipline took the oath individually.
Is it a one-day affair? Muthu Sudha said that the ministry would continue to exist and motivate students to maintain cleanliness and improve spoken English.
As many as 500 students of Mahatma Montessori Matric H.S. School at K.K. Nagar and Baba Building took part in the mock election and mock parliament sessions.
