XI, GOOD EARTH SCHOOL

This cub reporter speaks about an eco-friendly project they did.

The team: Protecting the enviroment.
What I hear, I forget,
What I see, I remember,
What I do, I understand.
This Chinese proverb has special significance as I write about the Ecoimagination Project we were a part of. The objective of the project was to suggest ways in which we could make our school more eco-friendly. The project was arranged by the Indian Green Building Council and the Confederation of Indian Industry. While we were excited about the prospect of undertaking such a big task, we were also slightly hesitant as to whether we could handle it properly.
We began by discussing aspects of our school that could use improvement. We noticed flooding in some regions during the rain; and an accumulation of gray water outside the area where we have lunch.
First we planned to channel the stagnant rainwater down the slope to a new eco-pond that would be built. We then designed a sedimentation tank for the gray water to pass through. So that it could be devoid of sludge and could be used in the fields, and also planned to introduce vermi-composting in our school.
There are 10 of us in our class and all of us were involved in different aspects of the project; some with the inception of the ideas, others with the execution of the plan, and the rest with the presentation. Every team member had a valuable learning experience through the project.
We passed the first level and from among 40 schools were one among the ten that were shortlisted. We then made a presentation to a panel of judges.
Tense moments
We also got to see the projects done by other schools. At the end of the day the results were announced. We were the second runners up. Sishya won the first place and P.S.S.S. the second. D.A.V. Mogappair got a special prize.
On the whole, this was a valuable experience as none of us was a passive observer.
We believe that every human being has a duty to rectify the damage done to the planet in whatever way he or she can. Pollution and environmental damage are seemingly insurmountable problems in today’s world, and many people are pessimistic as to how far small steps could go in eradicating such a large problem.
However, we believe we have learnt that change must begin at home, and have attempted to improve our local environment in our own small way. We believe that if every individual were to take steps towards bettering his or her own environment, worldwide change would indeed be possible.
