Holidays Ahoy!

A. B. SUDHINDRA

What are you doing this vacation?

The schools are closed for Dasara holidays and it is a welcome break for students, their parents as well as for teachers. The tired mind and body needs some relaxation and holidays provide that for many. It is time to visit grandma’s house and have some fun.

“Holidays mean 3Fs – fun, frolic and festivities. My Dasara vacation was no different. Only they were much more relaxed than the other vacations I’ve had. Festivities apart, I hadn’t really much to do, which is essentially a good thing. We spent a couple of days in Chennai, visiting all our relatives there. Then it was back to Bangalore. Festivities at home went on, what with the poojas and the kolu. And then, my best friend and I were at the Black Eyed Peas concert! It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” says Sandhya. V. Karthik, class X, feels that his previous vacations were better. He says, “My ninth standard holidays were far better than the present. Last year, there was no stress. I had gone for long trips across Karnataka and also abroad. So, I could enjoy myself throughout those holidays. But my tenth standard holidays are boring. Every day I have to attend tuition in the morning and after that do something related to academics.”

Reading and travel

Sandhya says that books were her companion during her spare time and also hastens to add that she learnt few "new things" during holidays.

“I absolutely love to read. I stacked up on books by Agatha Christie, who is my favourite author. And, when my nose wasn’t buried in a book, I was busy catching up on my piano playing. I also dabbled in web designing, which I should say, is my new found hobby,” she says.

Varsha Vasan caught up with the festive spirit during holidays. “In my house we are celebrating Dasara after a very long time. In keeping with tradition we had to display all the dolls collected over the years. Our enthusiasm saw us buy a few more dolls for which we went around to various streets. Apart from the fun and the festive splendour, I learnt many new bhajans and songs befitting the occasion,” she says.

Nanda has a different take on holidays. “And here’s what I really love about holidays – they give you a chance to catch up on your sleep. I sure caught up on mine,” he declares.
