The Coimbatore District Mahila Court Judge M.P. Subramanian on Friday convicted a 34-year-old mechanical engineer, Murugan, and his 62-year-old mother for abetting the suicide of his wife.

Murugan, a resident of Coimbatore, had married Asha alias Nagavalli, 26, at her native place Jayamkondam in June 2009.

According to public prosecutor R. Sarojini, soon after the marriage, Murugan and his mother Boopathi had begun to constantly harass Asha demanding gold jewellery and cash, stating that the money was needed for setting up a business.

Unable to bear their torment, Asha committed suicide by hanging at her residence in Elango Nagar, near Peelamedu, on May 11, 2011.

At the time of her death, the couple had a five-month-old baby.

Asha had left behind a letter stating that the harassment by her husband and mother-in-law was the reason for her death. This was also supported by witness accounts.
