: The inaugural Tiruchchirappalli - Tirunelveli Intercity Express (Train Number 22627) flagged off at Tiruchi around 9.30 a.m. on Saturday reached Tirunelveli Railway Junction at 3.10 p.m. amidst warm reception accorded by a group of people led by Tirunelveli MP S.S. Ramasubbu.
In the return direction, T.No. 22628 Tirunelveli - Tiruchchirappalli Intercity Express inaugural special left Tirunelveli Junction at 4 p.m. and reach Tiruchchirappalli at 10.30 p.m.
During an informal chat with the reporters Mr. Ramasubbu said steps would be taken to operate a connecting train from Nagercoil to Tirunelveli so that passengers of Kanyakumari district also could use this service. Similarly, efforts would be made to operate another intercity express to connect Tiruchi and Chennai so that pressure on the existing express trains connecting the southern destinations with Chennai would ease.
“Those who cannot get the tickets in the Chennai-bound express trains may travel in this train to reach Tiruchi. If another inter-city express train to connect Tiruchi with Chennai is introduced with comfortable timings, it will be of great help for the people of southern districts,” he said.
Those who received the train honoured engine driver N. Palanisamy also with a shawl while distributing sweets to the passengers. “This train will attain the speed up to 100 km per hour,” said Mr. Palanisamy.
Regular service of 22627 / 22628 Tiruchi – Tirunelveli - Tiruchi Intercity Express will commence from Tiruchi and Tirunelveli on Sunday (July 15). The train leaving Tiruchi at 7.15 a.m. will reach Tirunelveli at 1 p.m. via Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Satur, Kovilpatti and Vaanchi Maniyachchi.
In the return direction, the train will leave Tirunelveli at 2.15 p.m. to reach Tiruchi at 8 p.m.
The composition of the train will be one air-conditioned chair car, six second class chair cars, six general second class and 2 general second class-cum-luggage van coaches.
