A dilapidated two-storey building on Sunguvar Street in Triplicane, believed to be over 70 years old, collapsed on Wednesday morning crushing to death two of its residents.
The couple were the owners of the building and resided on the second floor.
A woman and her son were pulled out alive from the debris after over a five-hour rescue operation.
Residents said the second floor built a few years ago over the older structure led to the collapse.
The building, which extended from Sunguvar Street to Sunguvar Lane, comprised one residential portion on the second floor, four on the first floor and two on the ground alongside an electrical shop and a printing press.
“It all happened minutes after my daughter Shanmugapriya and I stepped out of the house to go to shop nearby. We turned around and were shocked to see our neighbour’s house falling into pieces,” said A. Tulasi.
