: A septuagenarian and his power of attorney were arrested on Monday by anti-land-grabbing cell for allegedly grabbing land in K. Sathanur village and selling segmented plots, in some cases the same plot to different buyers, with false documents.

The arrest of Muthukrishnan (78) and his power of attorney Sakthivel (42), realtors residing in Edamalaipattipudur, followed a complaint lodged by Suraya Begum and Mohamed Iqbal, a former Joint Director of Medical Services, whose 32 cents of land the accused had sold.

The couple, settled in Chennai, had reportedly bought the land 20 years back, according to an enquiry conducted by Revenue Divisional Officer to determine the veracity of their claim.

The RDO report indicated that the accused had no rights on the land, and the 32 cents of land mentioned in the case was a portion of the 49 cents the accused had reportedly grabbed. On the Commissioners orders the case was investigated by a team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police – Anti-land-grabbing cell R.M. Madhavan. The accused who had managed to sell land to prominent businessmen as well, claimed to be a descendent of Pudukottai Maharaja. On enquiries, the investigators found that the son of the accused, Prathap (32), was an accused in a few murder cases in Tiruchi and Tiruppur districts.

The two accused were produced before the court of the Judicial Magistrate – II, and subsequently lodged in Tiruchi central prison under judicial remand.
